Herbalife was founded in 1980 by Mark Hughes in response to the premature death of his mother who accidentally overdosed on a combination of prescription dieting pills. She was a model and, as many in the industry do, she struggled to keep her weight within a certain range.

Mark thought that there should be a safer way to achieve healthy nutrition and weight loss and so made it his mission, in memory of his mother, to research and formulate a nutrition product of the highest safety standards and effectiveness. After months of hard work and meeting with top scientists in the field he came up with Herbalife’s first and most widely recognised product – Formula 1 Nutritional Shake Mix – it’s still the keystone of Herbalife today, 31 years later.
